the "Jardin des retours"

The "jardins des retours" is a modern creation which ties in the tradition of European theme gardens. Designes by the team of bernard Lassus, the landscape architect, the Gardens tell the story of the Rochefort arsenal and celebrate the homecoming of the great expeditions of the XVIIth and the XVIIIth centuries, returning to port with their holds laden with unknown plants.

More about ...

The "Jardin des retours" is laid out in a progression of plants from the Charente up to the town and ambellishes the "Corderie" (ropewalk) with a casket of local and exotic plants. Between the "Corderie" and the Charente, it becomes "le Jardin des Amériques". At the edge of the river the vegetation retains the natural look of the local flora : reeds, hazel trees, willows, alders, box elders, ash trees etc. Behind the "Corderie" it turns inito the "Jardins de la Galissonière", in memory of the admiral of the same name who brought back numerous plants which were then introduced into the Rochefort botanical gardens, plants such as the Virginia creepers which are planted on the slopes. Others were to introduce Palm trees running in the parallel rows along the "Corderie". beyond, close to the "Maison de Roy" (Nowadays the "Hôtel de la Mairie"), the designe for the "Jardin de la Marine" has been preserved just as it was bequeahed to us by the XVIIIth century but enriched by the talent of the gardeners. the "Flammes des Amiraux" (Admiral's pennants), the naval battle maze or the "Aire des Gréements" (Rigging area) laid out along the Charente pathway, complete the evocation of the vessels' homecoming from the expeditions and recall Rochefort's prestigious maritime history.
